Planning a proposal is already special. Planning a surprise proposal and a same-day wedding in Boston? That’s something truly unforgettable.
On March 27th, in Boston — a day that started with cold air but already hinted at the arrival of spring — Jay created one of the most thoughtful and emotional experiences I’ve ever had the chance to photograph as a Boston proposal and wedding photographer.
Kenni knew a proposal might happen around that time… but she had no idea when. And she definitely didn’t expect that she would be getting married on the same day.
The proposal took place at the beautiful Columbus Park Trellis in Boston, a charming and historic location — and the perfect setting for a surprise proposal in Boston.
She arrived with three close friends, completely unaware that they were part of the plan. And when everything started to unfold, her reactions said it all — surprise, laughter, tears… and moments where she looked at her friends in disbelief, trying to understand how they had kept such a big secret.
When Jay got down on one knee, time seemed to pause. Their sweet dog, Torix, was right there with them, making the moment even more personal.
This day wasn’t just documented — it was carefully planned and brought to life with intention.
A Proposal That Turned Into a Wedding in One Day
And then… came the next surprise.
Jay had prepared a sign that read: “Marry me?”
But something was still hidden.
A wrapped package was covering part of the message. When Kenni opened it, she revealed the final word:
“Today.”
Her reaction was priceless — pure emotion, a mix of shock, joy, and disbelief.
Inside that same package was a delicate veil. The moment she saw it, she became even more emotional — it was the exact transition from proposal to wedding, happening right in front of her.
And Jay didn’t forget Torix.
He handed Kenni another small gift box. Inside was a tiny wedding outfit for their dog that read: “I do too.” A small detail, but one that made the entire moment even more meaningful and personal.
As if that wasn’t enough, Jay had also created a custom “Elope-a-dope Schedule” — a beautifully designed plan for the entire day, outlining each surprise that was about to unfold. It added a fun and creative touch, showing just how much thought and intention went into every step.
And the surprises kept coming.
At one point, bubbles started floating through the air — something Kenni loves — thanks to a bubble machine Jay had brought.
With every new moment, she laughed, cried, and tried to take it all in.
Her friends played such an important role throughout the day — helping plan everything with Jay and being there to celebrate every second.
One of them even brought champagne and glasses so they could toast right after the proposal.
In that moment, you could feel it — the shock was turning into joy, and the day was just getting started.
From there, we made our way through Boston, capturing candid moments along the streets — small in-between memories that often become the most meaningful ones.
They stopped by their office, where Kenni shared the news with coworkers who were genuinely happy for her. There’s something so special about those spontaneous reactions.
Inside, she quickly got ready for the next part of the day.
One moment that stood out to me was her applying her eyeliner — a simple, real moment that made everything feel even more authentic.
Soon after, she was ready.
There’s a photo of her smiling at Jay before they walked out — still a little in disbelief, but fully present in the moment.
Then it was time to head to City Hall.
On the way, her expressions said everything — surprise, laughter, and that look of “is this really happening?” that stayed with her throughout the day.
At Boston City Hall, they completed the paperwork required for a same-day wedding in Massachusetts. For couples considering this, the process usually includes applying for a marriage license and requesting a court waiver to skip the waiting period — allowing the ceremony to happen on the same day.
Next stop: one of the most meaningful places in Kenni’s story.
At the iconic Beantown Pub in Boston, a place connected to her time at Suffolk University, Kenni thought she was meeting a few coworkers for a casual moment after everything that had already happened.
A Surprise Bachelorette Celebration in Boston
What she didn’t know was that this was actually the start of her surprise bachelorette celebration.
Not only were her coworkers there — but also close friends she never expected to see that day. Friends who had known about everything and kept the secret until that moment.
The surprise hit her all over again.
More laughter, more tears, and that same look of disbelief — trying to process how everyone had been part of it without her noticing.
At that point, it wasn’t just one surprise anymore — it was a day that kept unfolding in ways she could never have imagined.
A Same-Day Wedding at Boston City Hall
Leaving the pub, they made their way on foot through Boston toward City Hall — taking in every moment, still processing everything that had already happened.
Torix walked right alongside them, wearing her floral detail that matched the wedding colors, turning heads and making the moment even more special.
When they arrived, we paused for a few photos right at the entrance — one of those simple but meaningful moments, with the city as their backdrop and the day unfolding so naturally.
Soon after, it was time.
Their ceremony, already scheduled for the afternoon, made everything official. In just a few moments, what started as a surprise proposal had turned into a real wedding.
Afterward, we captured a few portraits with Boston in the background — the kind of images that hold both the emotion of the day and the energy of the city around them.
A few hours later, the story continued.
Family members — who had no idea about the surprise wedding — were invited to what they believed was an engagement dinner in Cambridge.
Kenni’s parents even traveled all the way from Pennsylvania to be there, expecting to celebrate an engagement.
But when they arrived, something felt different.
Earlier that afternoon, I had quickly edited and shared a selection of photos from the proposal and ceremony, just as we had planned — and one of their friends had them printed in time for the dinner.
Those same photos were now displayed throughout the space.
As they looked closer, everything started to make sense.
They weren’t attending an engagement party.
They were looking at their wedding day — a moment they didn’t even know had already happened.
The reactions — especially from the parents — were deeply emotional. A mix of surprise, joy, and disbelief that quickly turned into one of the most powerful moments of the entire day.
Jay later shared a few words, talking about how important their community is — the friends and family who showed up, supported them, and helped bring this day to life.
As a photographer, I’ve seen many beautiful weddings. But this one was different.
It wasn’t just about the planning — it was about intention, emotion, and creating something truly meaningful.
At the end of the day, when I said goodbye, Jay and Kenni hugged me in a way that said everything — gratitude, happiness, and connection.
And for me, that’s what makes moments like this unforgettable.
This wasn’t just a proposal.
This wasn’t just a wedding.
This was a story full of love, surprises, and real emotion — right in the heart of Boston. This is what a same-day wedding in Boston can truly look like.
