An Intimate Coastal Wedding in Manchester-by-the-Sea

Some weddings are beautiful because of the details, the location, or the carefully planned timeline. Others stay with you because of the way they feel.

Madeline and Nick’s intimate coastal wedding in Manchester-by-the-Sea had all of those things: a breathtaking ocean view, a charming New England lighthouse in the background, colorful flowers, and a beautiful October afternoon. But what made this celebration truly unforgettable was the love shared between the couple and the small group of family members gathered around them.

Their wedding took place at a friend’s private home near Singing Beach in Manchester-by-the-Sea, Massachusetts. It was a sunny and surprisingly warm October day—the perfect setting for a relaxed celebration overlooking the rocky North Shore coastline.


A Small Wedding Filled With Meaning

Madeline and Nick chose to celebrate with only a few of their closest family members. The small guest list created such a comfortable and personal atmosphere. Everyone present had an important connection to the couple, and every part of the ceremony felt intentional.

Their sisters led the ceremony, making it even more personal and emotional. There was laughter, a few tears, and so many genuine moments shared between the couple and their families.

It was one of those wedding ceremonies where you could feel how loved the couple was just by looking at the people around them.

Handwritten Wishes and Paper Airplanes

Madeline and Nick also invited their family members to write wishes for their life together.

Instead of placing the messages inside traditional cards, everyone wrote their thoughts on pieces of paper and folded them into paper airplanes. The airplanes were sent toward the couple and then collected in a basket for Madeline and Nick to keep and read.

It was playful, creative, and deeply personal—perfectly reflecting the joyful and relaxed spirit of their wedding day.

The moment created so many wonderful photographs: family members carefully writing their messages, the paper airplanes flying through the air, and Madeline and Nick receiving them with huge smiles.

These are the kinds of traditions I love documenting. They are completely personal to the couple and the people they love. Years from now, the photographs will bring back not only what the day looked like, but also how it felt.

A Meaningful Family Ring Blessing

Another special part of the ceremony was a family ring blessing.

Before Madeline and Nick exchanged their rings, their parents and grandparents each had the opportunity to hold them and quietly fill them with their wishes, positive thoughts, and hopes for the couple’s marriage.

It was a simple tradition, but incredibly powerful.

Photographing the hands of their parents and grandparents holding the rings was one of those moments that reminded me how much family history and love can be carried in such a small object. When Madeline and Nick finally exchanged the rings, they carried with them the blessings of several generations.

Handwritten Vows From the Heart

One of my favorite details from the day was the handwritten wedding vows.

There is something so personal about seeing words written by hand—the crossed-out lines, the small corrections, and the thoughts carefully placed on paper. Unlike something typed and printed, handwritten vows feel completely connected to the person who wrote them.

Photographing those words added another piece to the story of their wedding day. The image preserves not only what Nick promised Madeline, but also the time and emotion he put into writing those promises.

During the ceremony, the couple read their vows surrounded by the people who knew and loved them best. It was honest, emotional, and beautifully personal.

Coastal Wedding Portraits With a New England View

After the ceremony, we explored the beautiful property for Madeline and Nick’s wedding portraits.

The landscape was everything you imagine when you think of coastal New England: ocean views, large rocks, tall grasses, wildflowers, mature trees, and a lighthouse rising in the background. The October sunlight gave the photographs a warm and romantic feeling while preserving the natural colors and textures of the coast.

Madeline and Nick were incredibly sweet together. Their connection felt effortless, and their portraits were filled with real laughter, quiet affection, and the kind of comfortable closeness that cannot be staged.

Some of my favorite portraits from the day were created as they sat together among the tall grass and wildflowers. With the lighthouse behind them and the soft movement of the coastal landscape around them, the photographs felt timeless, romantic, and unmistakably New England.

Their wedding outfits also fit the celebration beautifully. Madeline paired a romantic lace top with wide-leg denim, while Nick wore a denim jacket over his shirt and tie. Together with the colorful bouquet, their look felt fun, original, and completely true to who they are.

Celebrating With Their Closest Family

Because this was such a small wedding, there was no need to rush from one formal event to another. The family had time to sit together, talk, laugh, enjoy the view, and celebrate the newlyweds.

The relaxed schedule also gave us time to create family portraits that showed everyone’s personality. We made the traditional group photographs, but we also captured playful moments, big smiles, hugs, and plenty of laughter.

One of my favorite family photographs shows everyone gathered around Madeline and Nick with the ocean behind them. Some are waving, the couple is kissing, and every person looks genuinely happy to be there. It perfectly represents the spirit of the entire day.

A Sweet and Traditional Cake-Cutting Moment

The celebration continued with food and a beautiful cake decorated with fresh blackberries, raspberries, and small purple flowers.

Even though Madeline and Nick’s wedding was intimate and nontraditional in many ways, they still included the classic cake-cutting moment. They stood together, cut the first slice, and shared the kind of sweet, affectionate looks that make these traditional photographs feel so meaningful.

There was laughter, closeness, and so much love between them. The moment did not feel posed or formal—it simply felt like Madeline and Nick enjoying another small tradition together.

I always love photographing the cake cutting because it gives the couple a moment to slow down and celebrate after the emotions of the ceremony. These photographs may be traditional, but every couple brings their own personality and connection to them. For Madeline and Nick, the moment was relaxed, joyful, and filled with genuine affection.

The Beauty of an Intimate Wedding

Madeline and Nick’s celebration was a wonderful example of how meaningful a small wedding can be.

There were no large crowds or elaborate productions. Instead, the day was centered on handwritten words, family traditions, beautiful surroundings, and time spent with the people who mattered most.

Every detail reflected who they were: the colorful flowers, the relaxed outfits, the handmade paper airplanes, the family ring blessing, the handwritten vows, and the simple meal overlooking the ocean.

An intimate wedding allows couples to create a celebration that feels deeply personal. With fewer guests and fewer formalities, there is more time for conversations, emotions, and genuine moments to unfold naturally.



A Note I Will Always Remember

A few days after the wedding, I received something unexpected in the mail from Madeline and Nick: a handwritten thank-you card accompanied by printed photographs from their wedding.

They thanked me for being part of their small celebration and wrote that I was kind and made them feel comfortable throughout the day. They also shared how much they loved showing their photographs to friends and family.

One part of their note especially touched me:

“The photos you took captured the day so well.”

Receiving their card—and seeing one of my photographs already printed and displayed—was incredibly meaningful to me.

As a photographer, I know I am creating more than beautiful images. I am preserving moments that couples and families will continue to revisit, share, print, and treasure. Knowing that Madeline and Nick felt comfortable with me and recognized their own love and joy in the photographs was the most meaningful gift they could have given me.

Their card is still displayed in my home, together with the photograph they sent. It reminds me why I care so deeply about documenting both the important traditions and the quiet moments in between.
